This summer, the searches and inquiries had an additional twist. The questions came from music teachers who may be faced with cart teaching due to COVID-19 protocols put into place by their school districts...if they are teaching in person at all. Even though I’ve addressed a lot of cart teaching questions on this website, I wanted to share these three additional thoughts leaning more towards the current situation due to this virus that has changed the typical way we’ve approached things. Yet in this time of COVID-19, you may want to consider additional options. For example, you may not need a great amount of cart space due to a restriction of instruments and manipulatives you’re allowed to use (I’ll touch more on that later in this blog). Maybe a large tote bag might work better for your situation. Maybe a smaller, collapsable teaching tote with a telescopic handle might be enough. Take some time to sit down and brainstorm what might be your most used items for your lessons and then evaluate how much space you’ll truly need to bring those items from classroom to classroom.

Even though everyone is overwhelmed at the sheer amount of change going on and things being switched up minute by minute, you should be the one to take the initiative to communicate with your fellow colleagues whose rooms you’ll be teaching in and also communicate with your principal regarding your questions and needs. This includes safe storage of music items that you won’t be using daily and a place for you to have a “home base” of sorts to keep your daily, most used teaching materials accessible to you. Don’t be afraid to speak up multiple times if necessary, because things may fall to the back-burner unless you're the squeaky wheel (pun totally intended 😉 ). You’ll also need to be in communication regarding what materials you’ll be permitted to use with your students in your lessons and ways in which they want you to disinfect those items, and frequency of disinfection. Rather than going to your principals and asking if certain instruments are okay to use, be proactive by having a game plan already set in your mind (or write it down) as to how you plan on making an instrument or manipulative safe in these disinfecting days and communicate that to them.

Chuck. Your. Entire. Curriculum. Don't do that! Sometimes, in the panic of hearing you’re being placed on a cart, your mind can automatically go to thoughts like, “I can’t teach any of my lessons anymore, what am I going to do?!?” Don’t throw out the proverbial baby with the bathwater. First of all, start in small chunks. Begin your focus on activities for just the first few weeks back. Since it’s usually a time of transition and new things (and even more so now), I highly doubt anyone is expecting the most thorough, detailed, ‘pull out all the stops’ lessons as soon as you start back up again. You’re not the only one in transition and uncertainty, so as you hopefully give grace to your students, give some grace to yourself as well. Meaningful music making is not complex. Start with modifying the first 2 or so lessons you’ve used in the past and be open to changing things as you go, because once you’ve had a week or two or even three under you’re belt, you’ll have a better idea of how to further tweak and adapt your past lessons to your current situation. It’s at that point that you can sit down with several months of units or your yearly scope and sequence and decide how to take what you have and make it work. Too often people freeze in overwhelming fear of needing to know how to do ALL their lessons on a cart immediately. Don’t do that. Just start small.

Let’s take a moment to discuss music teaching materials and manipulatives. I’ve already mentioned in the previous point that you want to talk with your principals (if they haven’t already made it known to you) so you’re certain exactly what materials you’re allowed to use. Which instruments in your possession can be easily disinfected without damaging them? What can you laminate for easy cleaning? Do you even WANT to be disinfecting so many items? Maybe it’s more beneficial to give your students personal manipulatives that won’t be shared. Are your students old enough to have a hand in making those manipulatives so you won’t have to? This could be the case for upper elementary grades and above. If they can take some of that prep work off your hands, by all means, take a lesson time and have them make it!

Even if students keep their music manipulatives and instruments in separate plastic bags, you might not be allowed to have them toss those bags in a bin or box in their classroom. They may have to keep them in their own desks so there’s no cross contamination, but that works even better for you because there’s less for you to lug or keep track of.

If you’re limited on what music activities you can do, don’t give up...think creatively! For example movement is soooo much more than moving from one place to another in the meter or dynamics of music. There’s so much more to be explored without the need for massive space. Students can explore high, middle, low levels in their spots, heavy vs. light or bound vs. free movements with different parts of their bodies. Have you been told "no singing allowed"? Do a flipped classroom model and post songs through Google Slides, Flipgrid, or Loom for them to learn and sing at home. Then use the classroom time to explore other elements of the song, like its history or some music theory, composition, or improvisation activities. Not enough scarves for all of your students? Use tissues! No rhythm sticks? Use pencils or markers! The body itself is a great instrument, so replace music instruments with various body percussion actions and layer those sound effects for cool music making activities! We as musicians are a creative bunch, tap into that creativity for your lessons!

Also, don’t forget the power of asking around and/or searching online for inexpensive music instrument alternatives and materials! See if your local parent-teacher group or education foundation can help you with some supplies. There may be other teachers also seeking financial help from them, but it doesn’t hurt to ask for your program, too. Check out local online groups, whether on social media (like Facebook) or other local online forums and put out a request for donations. And if it comes down to reaching into your own pocket, search for bulk pricing deals from online vendors, craft stores, or hardware stores. The discount or dollar store isn't always the most cost effective option...do some online research and shop around. Thinking creatively and outside the box is key, especially since music teachers have multiple grade levels to consider.

I hope this gives you a starting place as you consider what you can do on your end to make the upcoming year as successful as possible, given the circumstances. It won’t look the way you intended, but that doesn’t mean students won’t gain musical knowledge and skills from your lessons this year. Even as one who has been teaching from a cart for many years, I also find myself in a place where I have to re-evaluate the coming year and change up how I’ve done things in the past. So we’re in this together!

I’d love to hear your thoughts or any ideas that *you* have about teaching in limited classroom space. Stories by elementary music teachers from all across the country describing how they have lost (or are about to lose) their music teaching classroom space. Sometimes a music teacher might get temporarily kicked out of their music room for Picture Day or for several days during state testing. Other times the inconvenience is for a slightly longer duration (several months to a year or so) to accommodate school renovations or a construction project. However, the emails most common in my inbox are from the “indefinitely” camp of music teachers who have lost their music rooms and are unsure if they will ever regain a music classroom space again. The reasons for this can be many, including:

You’ll probably need to add a minute or so to that travel time as pushing a cart slows down your usual speed compared to traveling by foot alone. In which area of the room can your music class take place? What kinds of distractions are in and around that area? While these are all good to address at the start of the year, be forewarned! Classroom teachers can decided to completely revamp how their room is arranged at any given point of the school year. Get a general idea of how the classrooms look initially, have a plan in place, yet keep in mind that it might change as the teacher also adjusts to the dynamics of his or her class and changes the space accordingly.

I highly suggest communicating your needs and expectations in black and white by typing up an email and even printing out a hard copy and distributing it to teachers' mailboxes, too, as some might not catch the email. Start off your message by thanking them in advance for your entering their classroom space. Now I know that neither you nor they had any say in this arrangement, but you're offering an olive branch of peace here. Humans are very territorial, so acknowledging that you're 'intruding' into their space (even though you're an equally valid teacher who has been unexpectedly displaced) goes a long way into defusing initial awkwardness.

Then, if you have reduced or inadequate transition time between class periods like I mentioned point #1, take a moment to address the fact that while you're trying your best to travel from classroom to classroom, there will be many times in which you will not make it to their room exactly on time and thank them in advance for their understanding of that issue. I've found that addressing it from the get-go and putting it openly on the table has afforded me a lot of extra grace from teachers.

Next in your message, address the following:

Expectations for teachers - Do you mind them being present in the room? Since music time is their prep time, I'm pretty lenient and don't mind them doing their prep work and moving about the room during music class (I just warn them of the active nature and anticipated volume level of music time, but they *love* hearing our music making!). Can you have access to their technology and/or other materials (ex. space to write on the board, access to their interactive whiteboard)? Let teachers know of your instructional needs.

Expectations for students - Where do you want them to sit when you arrive? I let teachers know in advance that if a student comes up to them during music time, to not answer their questions, but simply redirect that student back to me. This helps establish that even though you're in the students' classroom space, you are the head teacher in charge at that time. Establishing such boundaries is important to successful classroom management.

Expectations for music class time - Will you use the teacher's specific classroom rules, your own music rules, or a combination of both? Are there any behavior charts or class goals the students are working towards that you should know about? Again, reiterate to the classroom teacher that you'll take care of classroom management as the head teacher in charge at music time, but offer to work with them to support the behavior and teamwork goals they're establishing in their classrooms. I use a combination of my own "star musician" program and the classroom teacher's reward system as I make it a point to play up who my selected star musicians are for the day and have students brief their teachers on how they did during music class (Click here for more classroom management strategies!). I also ensure the classroom teachers that I'll establish a calm transition at the end of music class. In other words, I never roll out of a room until students have cleaned up their space, are settled down, and calmly ready for the next direction from their classroom teacher. And the teachers are *VERY* grateful for this!

Finally, follow up with a "thank you" email about a month into the school year and give a brief rundown of what has worked well so far and maybe offer some suggestions for things you'd like to change or try. I’ll address this a little more in point #3 below.

A dedicated prep space - This is very important! Every teacher should be allotted some type of prep space to sit down, type up emails, grade work, etc. It might be in another teacher’s classroom, a shared office space, or to the side of a stage. When I first lost my room, I shared a prep area in the art room. The following year, when she ALSO lost her art room, we both shared a tiny side room connected to the nurse’s office. We had that arrangement until a few renovations occurred and a slightly larger office became available, which I shared with the art teacher and the ESL teacher. I now utilize a small closet, but it's enough for my materials to be stored in and for me to put a folding chair inside to sit and work on my laptop. Wherever the prep space may be, it should be a dedicated space that you can have a place to sit down at and a place for your personal belongings. Insist (nicely!) on this needed space.

But I must warn you, bigger is NOT always better! In another blog post, I'll address what types of carts you can choose from (there are many options!), exactly what characteristics you need to look for when securing a cart, and how to fully outfit it for your teaching, but for now, consider the following:

Size - You'll need to push this bad boy around all day, so think very carefully about the size of your cart along with the ease of maneuverability because you don't want to injure yourself. Will bending down to push it hurt your back? Is the cart already heavy even though it's completely empty? Can it easily fit through the doorways of every classroom you'll be entering?

Storage - This is not only how many shelves are available on the cart, but the ways in which you can utilize ALL areas (inside, outside, upside, and down) of your cart. This could also include a locked storage section on your cart, if that's important to you.

Electrical requirements - Does your cart come with an extension cord or have the ability to incorporate electrical equipment that you'll need? Will you need to put a music playing device on your cart? Bluetooth speaker? Keyboard? Laptop?

Cart preparation is a whole other discussion and I'm very excited to share with you how I've rocked out my own cart in order to successfully implement my music lesson activities! But for now, what are your thoughts? Does your teaching schedule have absolutely no transition time between periods like mine does? Have you considered writing down your expectations and sharing them (in a super kind fashion) to the teachers whose rooms you'll be teaching in? Have your administrators given you a prep space? I'd maybe give a quick “hello” as I performed lunch duty in the cafeteria. Or when I had a music room, I’d greet them as they entered my room to sweep the floor or vacuum my music rug. However, once I began teaching music from a cart, my eyes were opened WIDE to how much they *really* do for the school.

A nomadic, cart teaching lifestyle can really open your eyes to the true nitty-gritty of what goes on in and around school.

As a ‘specials’ teacher, you tend to already lack the naturally occurring community that the other subject-area teachers experience because they share common planning time, curriculum meetings, lunch times, and the like. As I rolled through the hallways, passing by our school custodians again and again, it began to dawn on me that they lack such community, too! So I began to make it my mission to simply not ‘pass by’ anymore, but I started to reach out. I'd stop and ask how they were doing...and actually wait and listen to their response. And then sometimes ask follow-up questions. One year, I found out with one particular custodian that we shared something in common at that time: we were both taking care of a sick relative. After realizing this, we would both be sure to share an encouraging word whenever we chatted. I also saw that the kindness I put forth was coming right back to me in ways that I didn't expect. Although they were always helpful and kind to me, they now went the extra step with anything that I needed. Not just for concerts, but also for my cart-teaching needs at school, pointing out a parking space when I arrived mid-day from another school, bringing me something I left behind in a classroom, so many acts of kindness! One rainy day, my car battery died in the school parking lot. Most everyone had already left at that point of the day, but I ventured into the office anyway hoping to find someone. One of the custodians was there and as I explained what happened, he stopped what he was doing and went out into the rain, no umbrella, and pulled his truck up to my car to jump start my battery.

I sought to extend appreciation of our school custodians beyond just myself by incorporating my students in the acts of appreciation, too. Especially working with little ones, it’s easy for them to generalize and assume that things just magically become clean and in order overnight as they enter their elementary school building each morning. Side note: shout-out to all you moms and dads possibly feeling similar misunderstandings from your own children regarding *your* work around the house! So below, I list several ways in which your students can acknowledge the hard work of school custodians, along with examples of how I and other staff members show some love to our school custodians throughout the year, too!

During my afternoon bus duty, I remind them to greet their bus driver or at other parts of the day, greeting teachers they pass in the hallways (instead of silently staring and walking on past...what's up with that, kiddos?!). Since we're talking about familiar school community members, not random strangers on the street, I feel it's important to teach them politeness and these appropriate social skills. Regarding school custodians, since I teach on a cart and hold music in their classrooms, I'll see the custodians pop in and out classrooms, grabbing or bringing back the classroom lunch tubs, checking the thermostat, or other daily tasks. I use that as a teachable moment of acknowledgement. Sometimes it’s briefly pausing the lesson and giving a simple, “Say ‘hi’ to Mr. ____ everyone!” Other times, after the custodian leaves the room, I’ll briefly mention how they can be thankful for such a clean learning environment and encourage them to share a “Thank you for…” statement when they see him next. Some examples could be:

“Thank you for bringing down our lunch bins everyday.”

“Thank you for helping our school to be clean.”

“Thank you for the chairs you put out for our families at the concert.”

A simple "Thank you for..." statement can go a long way and I make sure to set the example by sharing my own thank you statements, whether my students are around or not.

2. Pick a time during the school year to offer one to your school custodians! For example, this can be done by having students sign their name on a large piece of construction paper (folded or open flat) after a grade-level concert. Maybe consider surprising your school custodian with a birthday card or an ‘end of the year’ thank you card by the students before summer vacation starts. I realized the power of a handmade card when one day, as I walked down the hall and passed the open door of the custodial closet, I spotted the large appreciation card my 3rd and 4th graders had made for him. He kept it and hung it up in his small office space. Don’t negate the power of a sincere, old-school, handwritten card!

3. We utilize the power of song to touch hearts so why not SING the praises of those whom we appreciate! A song I've loved using in the past comes from the Music K-8 resource and is aptly entitled: “We Appreciate You.” It’s a simple, upbeat song of appreciation that can easily be applied to anyone you’d like to give thanks to. It’s extremely catchy so my students *love* learning and performing it. One year, my principal decided to gather all the students into the all-purpose room and surprised our custodian by calling him down to the room via the loudspeaker, as if it was a usual clean-up duty to attend to. The moment he walked in, all the kids yelled, “Surprise! We appreciate you, Mr. ___!” and proceeded to sing through the song. Where's the love?! What I like about my schools' Sunshine Club is that in December, they include our school custodians in the gift-giving festivities and offer them gift cards! For several years now, I go above what the Sunshine Club does mid-year and I give each of my schools' custodians a gift card for something I know they can use and enjoy, and give it to them on the final day of school. This is just something I personally have felt moved to do to show my thanks for all of their help not only with my cart teaching, but also for ALLLLL of my concert performances. I conduct 11-12 concerts a year and they set up and break down over 200 chairs for each concert, along with schlepping the bulky metal risers to multiple schools, hoisting them on and off of the stage. What a job! Especially on top of everything else they must do. So I feel that they deserve some extra appreciation from me. I know *I* feel the love with each Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, and Amazon gift card I surprisingly get from students in December or at the end of the school year, so I like to pay it forward by purchasing gift cards I know would be of value to our custodians in their “free” time over the summer. Buying gift cards not your thing? Strapped for cash or teach in a larger district? Consider making something of value to share instead. Do you cook? Bake? Paint? Sew? Whatever your gift, make it, wrap it up and share it! Anything that sincerely comes from the heart is a beautiful, valuable thing. After the whirlwind of a chaotic school year, what better way to express your thanks to them than offering something that they can enjoy before going your separate ways for the summer months.

How about you? Does your school district do anything to acknowledge the custodians? Have you done anything special or encouraged your students to show their appreciation in some way? Do you get the chance to talk to your school custodians about stuff other than concert setup? Can you recommend another “thank you” song that you’ve used with your students before? It was the spring of my senior year of college, which for many education majors means “student teaching” time. All of us music education students met together with our professor once a week to debrief on our daily teaching adventures in the classroom. I remember sharing about all the amazing instruments and resources my music teacher mentor had available in both of her elementary music rooms (she taught at two schools) and how I enjoyed writing and implementing all sorts of musically engaging activities. Another friend of mine also shared about the lessons she successfully taught, however there was one big difference: her mentor was on a cart, therefore, she also had to teach music from a cart.

I was excited at the prospect of working in such an environment, but in the back of my mind a question kept lingering. When it came to the “Do you have any questions for us?” portion of the interview, among other things, I asked about any possibility of the music room being taken away, repurposed, or changed.
